Birding in the White Mountains

By Tommy J. DeBardeleben

Located in north eastern Arizona, the White Mountain region is very underbirded.  This underbirded but yet highly productive birding area has forested habitats that are typical of those in the Rocky Mountains.  The White Mountain region has a range that covers Navajo, Apache, and Greenlee Counties.  It has a wonderful diversity of habitats, with the dominant habitat being forests above the Transition Zone.  The White Mountains are home to several "specialties" throughout it's region, which are more reliably found here over anywhere else in Arizona, or may only be found in this particular region.  In the summer months, most of Arizona is very hot.  The White Mountains are a great place to bird on a summer vacation to escape the summer heat!
